Down the Overseas Highway to Key West

US-1 south of Florida City stops being a road and becomes an event: 113 miles of the Overseas Highway hopping key to key over water that shifts from jade to sapphire, across 42 bridges including the Seven Mile Bridge outside Marathon. It is the most beautiful drive in the state, and it is wasted on whoever has to stare at the centerline. Ride with me and everybody in the car gets the view.

The distances are friendlier than people expect. Key Largo is about 65 miles from Miami, an hour and a half; Islamorada around 90 minutes to two hours; Marathon about two and a half; and Key West, mile marker zero, sits 165 miles and roughly three and a half to four hours from Downtown Miami. The highway is mostly one lane each way, so local patience matters, and I have a full tank of it. I know where the traffic bunches in Tavernier and where the road opens up again.

Clients use this run three ways. One-way transfers, often flying into MIA and heading straight to a resort in Islamorada or a rented conch house in Old Town Key West. Day trips, where I drive down in the morning, wait while you do Duval Street, the Hemingway House and Mallory Square at sunset, and drive you home while you doze. And fishing or diving trips, where the Sprinter swallows the rods, coolers and dive bags whole.
